Intro

Looking for a kindergarten, you’re in the right place.

As ABCJunior operates as Malaysia’s 1st Early Years discovery platform, often we receive enquiries from parents with young children of age 2-3 looking for a kindergarten.

We would then share with parents that what they are looking for is a preschool or a playschool, not a kindergarten. Kindergarten are normally formed with the intention to prepare young children of age 5 –  6 transition into primary learning. Tho the steps that parents need to take to ensure that they place their child under the right care or environment are not that different.

Anyways back to the topic of Kindergarten in Malaysia:

Some are more academic – ensuring that they are able to understand basic maths, language and other area of knowledge before they transition into primary school.

While some are more towards building the character of the child and passion towards learning – ensuring that they are able to pick up learning as they go.

There’s no right or wrong approach towards Early Years education, it all depends on the character of your child and what kind of support he/she needs. But that being said, with more than 10,000 kindergarten to choose from in Malaysia, how do you select the right one for your child? After all, Early Years Education plays a huge role in the early stages of a child. Placing your child in the right environment and care is key.

Well if you’re in a position where you need assistance , here’s a guide for you – 3 steps to identify the right Kindergarten in Malaysia for your child.

Step #1 : Start your survey early

Some decisions are not meant to be rushed, and Early Years education for your child is one of them. Other than considering your child, you should also factor in several other factors such as:

(1) Will you be moving home in the next few years?
(2) How will transport arrangements be made?
(3) Will you be working full time and require additional daycare services?
(4) What’s the percentage from your total household income allocated for your child’s Early Years education?

Answering all of that will give you clear actionable plan for – Location, budget and requirement.
Location is the first factor you should consider. This is because a school that is near to your vicinity will allow you to attend quickly to your child in event of emergency. Also it will make it easier for your transport arrangements.

Once you’ve identified the location you would be able to travel to/ send your child to – then identify how much budget you can afford to allocate out for your child’s Early Years education.

Then with that figure, you can quickly filter out schools that are not suitable and move on to other schools instead.

Lastly, it’s all about your and your child. What does both of you need?

Ie. Can your child fit into a big group or would be more comfortable in a smaller group? Would you be able to pick up your child from school during lunch hours or do you require a full day care?

Once you figured out the requirement, filtering schools become easy.

It’s even easier with ABCJunior as you can immediately view and compare different providers at once. Parents get to use it for FREE too!

Step #2 : Plan your visits

Bringing your child along to visit the establishment is very important. It gives you the opportunity to witness their first hand experience with the establishment as well as if he/she likes the environment.

That being said, it’s impossible to bring your child to visit different kindergarten all in a day. It’s a tiring journey for the little one and also you want them to feel fresh on every trip. Hence, it’s very important to plan your visits. Make sure you only visit schools that fits within your budget and requirement so you don’t waste energy and time for you and your child.

Before the trip, it’s also important to read up on the establishment, the founder as well as the programs they offer in order to have a better experience during your visit. On ABCJunior, you can also schedule a direct appointment with the kindergarten(s) you have shortlisted.

Step #3 : Approach other parents for 2nd opinion

Still having doubts? Approach other parents for a 2nd opinion. Their opinion might not be entirely useful to you as every child is different, but it will offer you some form of insights of that particular kindergarten or any Early Years establishment.

There’s plenty of Malaysian forums where you can place/ start a discussion with other parents such as lowyat forum, reddit, Facebook etc. But a better way would be posting your doubts and enquiries on MECCE- Malaysia’s Early Childhood Care & Education Facebook page.

It’s a group started by our company as well where we gather all Malaysian parents under one singular group so they may connect to other parents, either for a chit-chat or to ask for some form of guidance from other parents for their little ones.
